Chapter twenty-eight

Marata had walked through the hidden door behind the shelving unit into total darkness. It looked like she’d stepped right into some giant’s open mouth to willingly let herself be swallowed. No hesitation. No break in stride.

Just waltzed right in.

I began to further suspect those black eyes that she and Gregor had picked up from the Org’s program gave them some sort of night vision. Would that work in a room devoid of all light?

A moment later, fluorescents began to flicker in the room, a harsh wash of unnatural white light.

One look at Gregor, and I knew that he was working hard to keep his face neutral. I hadn’t known the guy long—and had zero interest in knowing him a second more—but I could already pick out some of his tics.

He was easy enough to read. He’d clench his jaw when he was trying to come off as impassive. The result was that his lips pursed a little, and the cords in his neck bulged like ropes.

And dude was pursing and bulging big time.

Marata hooked out of sight to revealing a long white counter loaded down with complicated devices. Above that were what looked like shiny black cupboards with button-shaped keyholes above each handle.

I stated the obvious. “She’s been here before,” I said, my voice just above a whisper.

“What difference does it make?” He sneered, but his eyes never wavered from the open door. I could tell his mind was racing as well.

“I like to know who the hell I’m traveling across the country with!” I said, throwing a hand toward the open door. Yeah, we still hadn’t gone through. “It’s kind of a rule I got.”

Finally, he looked at me, a self-satisfied sneer on his face. “Is it, now?”

What a dick.

But he was right. I knew nothing about Gregor. Hell, I didn’t even know his first name, but it wasn’t like I wanted to be book club buddies or anything.

“Come on,” he said, stepping forward before I could will my own feet to move. “The data I’m looking for will be in there.”

I watched him go through the door, look left and right, then go in the opposite direction Marata had.

Yep.

And there I stood. By myself. It felt odd. Like going forward would be stepping into another universe. In a way, it was.

Once inside, I’d be in a world that belonged to the Organization. Their turf. Even if they weren’t around anymore.

Weird. I’d never felt territorial like that. I suppose that came from hanging out with a wolf-dude for the better part of a month.

“Get a grip,” I mumbled to myself. I took two or three steps, finally crossing the threshold into the hidden room. As I stood there, taking it all in, the panicky part of my brain, the red car-sale guy flapping in the wind, warned me that any moment, the door was going to thunk closed behind me, and I’d be trapped in here forever.

It did not thunk closed.

Whereas the room I’d just left looked like an accounting wing of some law office or shipping firm, this was otherworldly.
